Is pet insurance worth the cost?

   Like any insurance policy, there is no way to know if it will be cheaper to live with it or without it. It is a pretty steep monthly payment (depending on the coverage you get) and if you end up with a healthy, injury free dog then over the long run the insurance costs you more than just paying the vet bills out of your pocket. However, if your dog gets ill or injured the insurance can be worth its weight in gold. I am REALLY regretting not getting pet insurance on my puppy. My last dog (who lived to be 15 yrs old) was very expensive through out the course of his life and I always said that my next dog would have insurance. If only I had followed my original plan … I got a puppy and he went through all of his shots, was growing and healthy and happy and playful and all that good stuff. I looked into the insurance and decided that I couldn’t really afford the monthly premiums. When Antonio was 6 months old I took him in to be neutured and his pre-op bloodwork showed that he had a malfunctioning liver. We have had to recheck his blood several times and the problem is growing worse, not better. Now it is too late to get him insured because the insurance companies will only cover medical conditions or injuries that occur or have an onset AFTER coverage begins. He is now 8 months old, I have spent over $500 in lab work since his surgery and on Wednesday he had an $1,100 vascular ultra sound of his liver done by a specialist. Guess what?!? It didn’t tell us nearly enough, the next step is a liver biopsy … I wonder what that will cost. If only I had gotten the insurance … Those monthly premiums are looking pretty cheap and affordable now. There is no way to know ahead of time. Sorry, but there is not right or wrong answer because there is no way to know if your pet will need more vet care than the cost of the premiums over the course of her lifetime. If she is already pregnant I doubt the insurance would cover any of the costs of this pregnancy.
